Criticality of avalanche dynamics in adaptive recurrent networks

چکیده
In many studies of self-organized criticality (SOC), branching processes were used to model the dynamics of the activity of the system during avalanches. This mathematical simplification was also adopted when investigating systems with a complicated connection topology including recurrent and subthreshold interactions. However, none of these studies really analyzed whether this convenient approximation was indeed applicable. In present paper we study the correspondences between avalanches generated by branching processes and by a fully connected neural network. The benefit from the analysis is not only the justification of such correspondence but also a simple learning rule, which allows self-organization of the network towards a critical state as recently observed in slice experiments. r 2006 Elsevier B.V. Avalanche dynamics of an idealized neuron function in the brain on uncorrelated random scale-free network
We study a simple model for a neuron function in a collective brain system. The neural network is composed of uncorrelated random scale-free network for eliminating the degree correlation of dynamical processes. The interaction of neurons is supposed to be isotropic and idealized. This neuron dynamics is similar to biological evolution in extremal dynamics with isotropic locally interaction but...
متن کاملDynamical synapses causing self-organized criticality in neural networks
We show that a network of spiking neurons exhibits robust self-organized criticality if the synaptic efficacies follow realistic dynamics. Deriving analytical expressions for the average coupling strengths and inter-spike intervals, we demonstrate that networks with dynamical synapses exhibit critical avalanche dynamics for a wide range of interaction parameters. We prove that in the thermodyna...
متن کاملNeural avalanches at the edge-of-chaos?
Does the brain operate at criticality, to optimize neural computation? Literature uses different fingerprints of criticality in neural networks, leaving the relationship between them mostly unclear. Here, we compare two specific signatures of criticality, and ask whether they refer to observables at the same critical point, or to two differing phase transitions. Using a recurrent spiking neural...
متن کاملSelf-organized criticality and coevolution of network structure and dynamics.
We investigate, by numerical simulations, how the avalanche dynamics of the Bak-Tang-Wiesenfeld sandpile model can induce emergence of scale-free networks and how this emerging structure affects dynamics of the system.
متن کاملAvalanches in Self-Organized Critical Neural Networks: A Minimal Model for the Neural SOC Universality Class
The brain keeps its overall dynamics in a corridor of intermediate activity and it has been a long standing question what possible mechanism could achieve this task. Mechanisms from the field of statistical physics have long been suggesting that this homeostasis of brain activity could occur even without a central regulator, via self-organization on the level of neurons and their interactions, ...
